Decline and revitalization (1900–…)

After a period of intense activity during the 19th century, Place-Royale was gradually abandoned by the economic elite, who began to move to other boroughs. From being the embodiment of prestige and commercial vitality just a few decades earlier, Place-Royale underwent a major transformation in the 20th century, eventually becoming a working-class neighbourhood.

It was not until the 1950s, when a revitalization project was launched, that Place-Royale began to regain its former glory. Dozens of buildings were rebuilt or renovated to evoke the golden age of the French regime and highlight the site’s roots. Place-Royale as we know it today is the result of this massive revitalization project.
